Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday strongly criticised the Congress and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over what he described as an offensive and unacceptable remark against Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu.
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, he said branding a Sikh Member of Parliament as a ‘traitor’ amounted to an insult not just to the individual, but to the entire Sikh community.
The Prime Minister said such language reflected a deeply negative mindset and questioned why the Congress failed to express regret or remorse within Parliament. He argued that public discourse demanded responsibility and dignity, especially when directed at elected representatives.
PM Modi referred to an incident outside Parliament near Makar Dwar on Wednesday. He said Rahul Gandhi addressed Ravneet Bittu as his ‘traitor friend’ while attempting a handshake, which the Union Minister declined.
PM Modi described the episode as unfortunate and unbecoming of democratic conduct.
Calling Ravneet Bittu a distinguished parliamentarian, the Prime Minister said the remark demeaned public life. He added that such behaviour, rather than strengthening the Opposition, would ultimately harm the Congress itself.
Shifting focus, PM Modi praised Sadanand Master, a Rajya Sabha MP from Kerala, for his maiden address in the House. He highlighted Master’s composure and dignity despite having endured a brutal attack decades ago that resulted in the loss of both legs.
The Prime Minister said Sadanand Master suffered grievously due to ideological hostility, yet carried no bitterness or resentment. He described this attitude as a powerful lesson in resilience, tolerance, and democratic values.
PM Modi said Master’s calm conduct and measured words reflected exceptional character. He added that such leaders elevated parliamentary standards and inspired both the nation and the political fraternity.
The Prime Minister also criticised Opposition members for failing to show respect during Sadanand Master’s first speech. He said the moment should have prompted reflection and empathy, given the personal sacrifices behind the voice addressing the House.
PM Modi noted that Sadanand Master now contributes actively to policymaking and public service.
According to PM Modi, his journey symbolises patriotism, courage, and selfless dedication to the nation.
Concluding his remarks, the Prime Minister urged lawmakers to uphold civility and respect. He said Parliament must remain a space for principled debate, not personal attacks, and honour those who embody democratic values through conduct and sacrifice.
