PM Modi Set To Inaugurate State-Of-The-Art Navi Mumbai International Airport

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the state-of-the-art Navi Mumbai International Airport on October 8.

Developed as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), Mumbai International Airport Ltd, a subsidiary of Adani Airports Holdings Ltd, holds a 74 per cent stake, while CIDCO (City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd) holds 26 per cent.

As Mumbai’s second international airport, following Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Navi Mumbai Airport has recently received its aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), paving the way for operations to commence.

The airport will accommodate both domestic and international travellers, offering cutting-edge passenger terminals, a 3,700-metre runway for large commercial aircraft, and advanced air traffic control systems.

Airlines such as IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express have already announced plans to operate from the airport, connecting multiple domestic cities.

The airport handles cargo through a fully automated terminal capable of processing 0.5 million metric tonnes annually. It includes a semi-automated Material Handling System, 100 per cent shipment tracking, a truck management system, and cashless, paperless operations.

Strategic Location and Connectivity

Strategically located, the airport lies 14 km from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), 22 km from MIDC Taloja Industrial Area, 35 km from Mumbai Port Trust via the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, 32 km from Thane, and 40 km from Bhiwandi.

Once operational, it will cater to the growing air traffic demands of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Western India, while strengthening India’s global connectivity.

Developers are constructing the airport in phases across 1,160 hectares, making it twice the size of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Initially, it will serve 20 million passengers per annum, with plans to scale up to 90 million passengers and manage over 3.2 million metric tonnes of cargo annually.

This landmark project represents a major step in India’s aviation infrastructure development, offering world-class facilities, advanced technology, and sustainable operations.

The airport will boost trade, tourism, and regional economic growth, positioning Navi Mumbai as a key hub for domestic and international air travel.
