Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said Puducherry has the potential to become a major medical tourism hub in India, as he inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth ₹2,700 crore in the Union Territory.
Addressing a large public gathering, he emphasised that mobility, modern infrastructure and quality healthcare are fundamental pillars of sustained growth. Greeting the crowd with ‘Vanakkam Puducherry’, the Prime Minister said the double-engine NDA government had worked extensively for the welfare of the people.
Highlighting healthcare as a national priority, PM Modi said a country can progress only when its human capital remains healthy.
He also said healthcare must be accessible, available and affordable, ensuring no resident has to travel far for treatment.
He envisioned Puducherry attracting patients from India and abroad, noting that its nine medical colleges provide a strong base to become a medical tourism hub.
Calling mobility key to growth, he announced rural road projects and a ₹140-crore flyover to ease congestion.
He said electric buses under the PM e-Bus Seva scheme will cut pollution, while new water and sewage projects will improve civic infrastructure.
Emphasising youth empowerment, he inaugurated new facilities at NIT Karaikal and Puducherry University, and welcomed long-pending recruitment drives that have created fresh job opportunities.
The Prime Minister added that the Union Budget has allocated ₹12 lakh crore for infrastructure and included Puducherry under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment scheme.
This will expand funding for roads, water supply, coastal infrastructure, schools and hospitals.
Recalling his vision of ‘BEST Puducherry’ — business, education, spirituality, and tourism — PM Modi said the Union Territory is witnessing steady progress.
He added that coordinated efforts between the Centre and the UT government would further accelerate Puducherry’s growth trajectory.
