Prime Minister Narendra Modi honoured Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel during the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav held in Gujarat’s Gir Somnath district on Monday. He credited Patel’s leadership and determination for the reconstruction of the Somnath Temple after the country achieved Independence.
Sharing his thoughts on X, the Prime Minister stated that Sardar Patel had envisioned the revival of Somnath as a reflection of India’s cultural pride and spiritual heritage. He further said that the nation remains dedicated to realising Patel’s aspirations for India.
At Somnath, paid heartfelt tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, whose vision and resolve played a defining role in the Temple’s reconstruction. He dreamt of seeing Somnath rise again in all its glory, as a symbol of India’s civilisational pride and spiritual continuity.

As part of the celebrations, PM Modi took part in the Vishesh Maha Puja, Kumbhabhishek and Dhwajarohan rituals at the temple. The event marked 75 years since the rebuilt Somnath Temple was inaugurated in 1951 by India’s first President, Dr Rajendra Prasad.
The Prime Minister also unveiled a commemorative postage stamp and special coin to honour the temple’s historic and spiritual importance.
While addressing a public gathering, PM Modi described the rebuilding of the Somnath Temple as an important moment in India’s post-Independence history. He said the reconstruction reflected the country’s renewed civilisational confidence.
According to the Prime Minister, the effort symbolised India’s emergence from colonial rule.
The Prime Minister noted that Sardar Patel united more than 500 princely states. He added that Patel also encouraged efforts to restore India’s ancient heritage through projects such as Somnath.
PM Modi further acknowledged the contribution of Dr Rajendra Prasad, who supported the reconstruction initiative despite resistance from certain quarters.
During his speech, PM Modi criticised politics driven by appeasement. He also referred to the opposition faced during the rebuilding of the Somnath Temple.
The Prime Minister added that similar debates emerged during the construction of the Ram Temple.
The Prime Minister stressed that India must advance while preserving both its development goals and cultural traditions. He described the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav as an occasion that inspires remembrance of the past.
PM Modi added that the event also strengthens confidence in the country’s future.
