PM Modi Renews Commitment To Combat Sickle Cell Disease On World Sickle Cell Day

On World Sickle Cell Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed his government’s dedication to tackling sickle cell disease, emphasizing the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission as a pivotal initiative in this endeavor.

In a statement, PM Modi underscored ongoing efforts to raise awareness about this hereditary blood disorder and highlighted advancements in universal screening, early detection, and comprehensive care.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “On World Sickle Cell Day, we reiterate our commitment to overcome this disease. Last year, we launched the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission and have been working on aspects like creating awareness, universal screening, early detection and proper care. We are also leveraging the power of technology in this area.”

Acknowledging the role of technology in advancing these efforts, PM Modi emphasized the government’s proactive approach in leveraging technological innovations to combat sickle cell disease effectively.

World Sickle Cell Day, observed annually on 19 June, serves to enhance global awareness about sickle cell disease, a condition where abnormally shaped red blood cells obstruct blood flow, leading to severe pain episodes, organ damage, and a reduced life expectancy typically into the mid-40s.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda Emphasizes Government’s Sickle Cell Disease Strategy

Union Health Minister JP Nadda echoed PM Modi’s sentiments, highlighting the government’s strategy to promote early diagnosis, facilitate access to treatment, and improve the overall quality of care for individuals affected by sickle cell disease.

Taking to X, Nadda posted, “Every year on June 19th, we observe World Sickle Cell Day to raise awareness about sickle cell disease. Guided by the mantra “Hope Through Progress: Advancing Global Sickle Cell Care & Treatment,” we strengthen our commitment to combating this disease. Our efforts focus on promoting early diagnosis, ensuring access to treatment, and enhancing the quality of care for those affected.”

Sickle cell disease remains a significant public health challenge globally, particularly prevalent in regions like India, where awareness campaigns and strategic interventions are crucial in mitigating its impact on affected communities.
