World Sickle Cell Day, observed annually on 19 June, serves to enhance global awareness about sickle cell disease, a condition where abnormally shaped red blood cells obstruct blood flow, leading to severe pain episodes, organ damage, and a reduced life expectancy typically into the mid-40s.
