PM Modi also shared a video message in which he described Veer Savarkar as a personality filled with extraordinary qualities. He said Savarkar’s sacrifice, courage, and determination remain a source of inspiration for the nation.
The Prime Minister noted that Savarkar believed equally in the power of knowledge and strength, while also making significant contributions as a poet and social reformer who advocated harmony and unity in society.
Recalling his visit to the Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where Savarkar served his Kalapani sentence under British rule, PM Modi said the experience left a lasting impact on him. He said Savarkar’s fearless and self-respecting personality never accepted the mentality of slavery during British rule.
PM Modi added that the nation continues to remember Savarkar’s immense contribution to India’s freedom movement.
Born on May 28, 1883, in Nashik, Maharashtra, Veer Savarkar was a freedom fighter, writer, lawyer, and politician associated with organisations such as the Hindu Mahasabha, India House, and the Free India Society. He authored ‘The Indian War of Independence’, a book that the British government later banned.
