Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday marked National Girl Child Day by reaffirming the Union government’s commitment to empowering the girl child and ensuring an environment where she can live with dignity and opportunity while contributing to a developed India.

In a message shared on X, the Prime Minister said, “On National Girl Child Day, we reaffirm our unwavering resolve to ensure that the girl child leads a life of dignity, opportunity, and hope.”

He added that sustained focus over the last decade on education, skilling, and healthcare has helped create conditions in which girls can flourish and play an active role in building a Viksit Bharat.

Decade Of Focus On Education And Healthcare

The Prime Minister noted that government initiatives across sectors such as education, technology, skills, and healthcare have played a key role in empowering girls. On earlier occasions, too, he has stressed the need to provide a wide range of opportunities and to eliminate discrimination.

India is proud of the accomplishments of the girl child across all fields. Their feats continue to inspire us all,” he said, while reiterating the resolve to ensure equality and fairness for every girl.

Progress Under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao

National Girl Child Day is observed annually on January 24 to highlight the rights, education, health, nutrition, and overall welfare of girls. Initiated in 2008 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the day aims to raise awareness about gender discrimination and promote equal opportunities.

According to the ministry, sustained efforts under schemes such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao have delivered measurable outcomes. The Sex Ratio at Birth has improved from around 918 in 2014–15 to 930 in 2023–24 at the national level.

The Gross Enrolment Ratio for girls at the secondary level has also risen from 75.51 per cent in 2014–15 to 78 per cent in 2023–24, reaching 80.2 per cent in 2024–25.

The day also focuses on addressing persistent challenges such as gender bias, child marriage, and barriers to education, while encouraging girls’ participation in STEM, leadership, and nation-building.
