PM Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin on Sunday to discuss strengthening bilateral relations. The talks took place on the sidelines of the two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit and come amid rising concerns over US tariff threats.
PM Modi emphasised that India-China cooperation will benefit ‘the welfare of the entire humanity’. He reaffirmed that New Delhi will advance relations based on mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity.
In his opening statement, PM Modi acknowledged Xi Jinping’s invitation and recalled their previous discussions in Kazan, Russia, in 2024. He said:
PM Modi noted that bilateral cooperation closely links the interests of 2.8 billion people in India and China.
The Prime Minister congratulated Xi Jinping on assuming the SCO Chairmanship. Senior officials attended the meeting, including India’s NSA Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, as well as China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
The two leaders discussed border issues along the 3,500-km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC). Experts highlighted that recent agreements on patrolling protocols have eased a four-year confrontation, providing a breakthrough in dialogue between the nations.
Analysts suggest the Tianjin meeting carries symbolic weight, reinforcing bilateral ties while signalling a unified stance in response to US-imposed tariffs. The engagement reflects both countries’ commitment to strategic cooperation and regional stability.
