Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin on Sunday on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.
The meeting, their first in ten months, aimed at consolidating bilateral ties and advancing recent progress in the relationship between the two Asian powers.
The last encounter between the two leaders took place during the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, in 2024. Since then, both nations have moved forward on resolving long-standing border issues, creating fresh space for dialogue.
The renewed engagement follows an agreement reached earlier this year on patrolling protocols along the 3,500-km Line of Actual Control (LAC). This breakthrough helped ease a four-year standoff and has been viewed as a turning point in efforts to restore trust.
PM Modi arrived in Tianjin on Saturday afternoon to a colourful reception at Binhai International Airport.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Landed in Tianjin, China. Looking forward to deliberations at the SCO Summit and meeting various world leaders.”
Earlier in August, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited New Delhi for the latest round of Special Representatives talks with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
During the meeting, Wang Yi underlined Beijing’s commitment to improving ties, saying that both nations benefit from a ‘healthy and stable’ India–China relationship, and developing countries widely support it.
In an interview with Japan’s The Yomiuri Shimbun ahead of the summit, PM Modi stressed India’s readiness to take relations forward on the principles of ‘mutual respect, mutual interest, and mutual sensitivity’.
He further added that since his last meeting with Xi in Kazan, the two sides had achieved ‘steady and positive progress’.
The Prime Minister further emphasised that stable and predictable relations between India and China, as the world’s two largest nations, could contribute positively to regional stability, global peace, and prosperity.
He also highlighted the importance of cooperation in the current economic climate, arguing that both countries, as major economies, had a responsibility to work together for global economic stability.
