PM Modi Promises GST Reforms, Signals ‘Double Diwali’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation from the Red Fort on Independence Day, unveiling bold plans to overhaul India’s GST system. He announced the formation of a high-level task force tasked with implementing next-generation reforms across governance, taxation, and public service delivery.

In a festive tone, PM Modi promised a ‘Double Diwali’ for citizens this year, signalling sweeping changes in the GST regime.

“This Diwali, I am going to celebrate a double Diwali for you. Citizens will receive a big gift, with a drastic cut in GST on common household items,” he stated.

This move underscores the government’s focus on reducing the tax burden on ordinary citizens and improving affordability.

The Prime Minister emphasised that reviewing GST rates is the need of the hour.

“GST rates will be reduced drastically. Tax will be reduced for the common people,” he added.

The reforms aim to simplify the system, improve equity, and modernise India’s indirect tax framework.

GST’s Evolution and Impact

Since its launch in 2017, GST has unified India’s indirect tax structure. It simplified compliance and enhanced the ease of doing business, particularly for small and medium enterprises.

As GST marks its eighth anniversary, the proposed overhaul builds on its achievements. The new-generation reforms aim to streamline rates, enhance transparency, and ease the financial burden on households.

Record GST collections and growing support from businesses for simplification provide a positive backdrop for these changes.

Experts believe the reforms will benefit citizens and businesses alike while maintaining revenue growth, balancing consumer relief with fiscal sustainability.

As the task force begins its work, expectations are high for a GST overhaul that delivers tangible benefits. PM Modi’s message combines structural reform with festive optimism, signalling a transformative phase in India’s fiscal policy.

The initiative highlights the government’s commitment to citizen-centric economic governance. If implemented effectively, the reforms could redefine India’s indirect tax system, reduce household expenses, support businesses, and strengthen the nation’s economic framework.

With Diwali approaching, citizens eagerly await the ‘big gift’ promised by the Prime Minister, a modernised, equitable, and simplified GST regime that could positively impact millions across the country.
