Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday attended the golden jubilee celebrations of the Kerala Dheevara Sabha in Kochi, praising the fisher community and highlighting government initiatives to strengthen India’s fisheries sector.
Addressing the 50th anniversary of the Kerala Dheevara Sabha, PM Narendra Modi called the occasion historic and praised the organisation’s efforts for the welfare of fisherfolk in Kerala.
Responding to Sabha president V Dinakaran, PM Modi said he had come to seek the community’s blessings.
The Sabha represents nearly 2.5 million fisherfolk and has influence in about 45 Assembly constituencies.
PM Narendra Modi praised fisherfolk for protecting India’s coastal resources and preserving traditional practices. He said their work reflects India’s cultural respect for water bodies as Mother Nature, and also paid tribute to spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi for her humanitarian service.
Recalling the devastating Kerala floods, the Prime Minister said fisherfolk played a key role in rescue operations and saved many lives, adding that the nation remains grateful for their courage.
Highlighting government efforts, PM Modi said the NDA government created a separate ministry to strengthen the fisheries sector and promote the blue economy. He added that projects worth about ₹1,400 crore have been allocated for Kerala’s fisher community.
The Prime Minister also highlighted initiatives such as the National Fisheries Digital Platform, satellite navigation support for fishing boats, modern coastal villages, and the modernisation of fishing harbours with facilities like ice plants.
PM Modi said the fisheries sector is adopting modern technology, and schemes such as Sagar Mitra aim to ensure these benefits reach fisher households across the country.
