PM Modi, PM Wong Agree On Boosting Ties In Skills, Manufacturing & Connectivity

Speaking on Thursday, Singapore PM Lawrence Wong remarked that the bond with India is founded on mutual confidence and aligned objectives, underscoring its depth of the relationship that matters even more as the global environment turns uncertain.

In his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House, PM Wong noted that both countries had mapped out a viable strategy to strengthen future ties and the next stage of cooperation.

The plan concentrates on skills, advanced industry and connectivity by air, sea and digital networks.

Skills and Manufacturing

Singapore will partner India on a new national centre of excellence in Chennai focused on advanced manufacturing, he said, alongside state-level training hubs aligned to industry demand.

Early priorities include aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul and semiconductors.

PM Wong framed the skills push as essential to keeping workforces competitive as technology reshapes production.

Singapore still ranks as one of the top origins of international capital flowing into India.

PM Wong noted that the emphasis is shifting from the headline sums to building capacity on the ground—factories, supply chains and technology transfer that create durable jobs and productivity gains.

Connectivity on Three Fronts

The leaders endorsed closer civil aviation ties, with a new memorandum to expand training, research and development.

At sea, they welcomed the launch of phase two of PSA’s Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal at Navi Mumbai, expected to emerge as the country’s largest standalone container hub when entirely operational.

India and Singapore are deepening digital links by developing interoperable financial systems to speed up and reduce the cost of cross-border payments for travellers and businesses.

They have already launched over twenty Singapore-built satellites from Indian sites and will now expand space collaboration through a new cooperation pact focused on satellite development and joint research.

PM Wong said the aim is to ‘push boundaries’ where civilian space technology meets commercial use.

The leaders also agreed to broaden exchanges between officials and expand cultural and educational contacts—seen in both capitals as the glue that keeps policy cooperation resilient.

Wong highlighted India’s impressive economic strides over the previous decade and remarked that Singapore sees room to enhance collaboration to bolster both regional balance and advancement.

He said the road map settled in New Delhi aims to transform intentions into practical deliverables as the India-Singapore relationship enters a new phase.
