Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya on his birth anniversary on Thursday, recalling his contribution to public welfare and nation-building.
PM Modi said Upadhyaya’s thoughts and ideals continue to inspire efforts to improve people’s lives.
In a post on X, PM Modi further highlighted Upadhyaya’s philosophy of Antyodaya, which focuses on the welfare and upliftment of the person at the bottom of the social and economic ladder. He said the principle remains relevant to efforts aimed at ensuring development reaches every section of society.

PM Modi also called for renewed efforts to understand and follow Upadhyaya’s ideas while fulfilling social and national responsibilities.
He described the occasion as an opportunity to reaffirm the commitment to public welfare and inclusive development.
Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya was born on September 25, 1916. He emerged as a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the political predecessor of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
A politician, philosopher and thinker, he also developed the concept of Integral Humanism, which sought to place Indian cultural values and the welfare of society at the centre of development.
His philosophy of Antyodaya further emphasised the upliftment of the most disadvantaged person in society and called for development that benefits people across social and economic groups.
Upadhyaya remained an influential figure in the political and ideological history of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. His ideas on social welfare, self-reliance and nation-building continue to feature in political discourse.
Upadhyaya died on February 11, 1968. His birth anniversary is observed each year to remember his contribution to Indian political thought and his emphasis on Antyodaya and social welfare.
