Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid heartfelt tributes on Saturday to two revered sons of Tamil Nadu, Tiruppur Kumaran and Subramania Siva, whose courage and sacrifice helped shape India’s freedom movement.
The Prime Minister further described their lives as symbols of unwavering patriotism and moral strength. He urged citizens to draw inspiration from their legacy as the nation advances towards unity and development.
In a message shared on X, PM Modi wrote, “On this day, we remember and bow to two great sons of Bharat Mata, Tiruppur Kumaran and Subramaniya Siva. Both hail from the great state of Tamil Nadu and dedicated their lives to India’s independence and awakening a spirit of nationalism.”
PM Modi hailed Tiruppur Kumaran, affectionately known as Kodi Kaththa Kumaran (‘Kumaran who guarded the flag’), for his unmatched valour and ultimate sacrifice.
In 1932, during a protest against British colonial rule, Kumaran defied the authorities by holding aloft the banned Indian national flag. Even as he succumbed to police assault, he refused to let go of the Tricolour.
His death, clutching the flag, became a defining image of resistance and an enduring symbol of love for the motherland. The Prime Minister noted that Kumaran’s courage continues to inspire the youth of Tamil Nadu and serves as a reminder of the price paid for freedom.
PM Modi also remembered Subramania Siva, a writer, orator, and social reformer. Siva ignited patriotic fervour across the country through his words and actions.
Siva was a close associate of VO Chidambaram Pillai and other revolutionaries. He endured multiple imprisonments and severe illness due to his relentless activism.
Through his writings and speeches, Siva stirred nationalist consciousness among Indians. His journal, Gnanabhanu, encouraged people to reclaim their cultural identity.
The Prime Minister, however, praised Siva’s intellectual bravery. He said that Siva’s vision of an awakened and self-reliant India remains deeply relevant today.
PM Modi reflected on the contributions of both leaders. He highlighted that their sacrifices exemplify the indomitable spirit that drove India’s struggle for independence.
“Their fearless devotion and love for the motherland should continue to guide our journey as a nation,” he further said.
The Prime Minister invoked the courage of Kumaran and the wisdom of Siva. He emphasised the importance of remembering those who laid the foundations of a free and self-confident India.
He said their ideals should inspire citizens to work towards unity and resilience. These values form the cornerstone of India’s ongoing progress and sustainable growth.
