UK Prime Minister Starmer To Visit India; Hold Talks With PM Modi In Mumbai

The United Kingdom’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer will embark on a two-day official visit to India starting October 8 at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Saturday. This will be Prime Minister Starmer’s first official trip to India.

During the visit, PM Modi and PM Starmer will meet in Mumbai on October 9 to review the progress of the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership under the ‘Vision 2035’ roadmap.

The plan outlines a 10-year strategy focusing on trade and investment, technology and innovation, defence and security, climate and energy, health, education, and people-to-people relations.

The two leaders will engage with business and industry leaders to explore opportunities arising from the India–UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), a cornerstone of the future economic partnership. They will also discuss regional and global issues of mutual concern.

PM Modi and Starmer will attend the sixth edition of the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai, delivering keynote addresses and interacting with policymakers, industry experts, and innovators.

The event will help the two countries foster collaboration in financial services, capital markets, and fintech innovations.

Building on PM Modi’s UK Visit

The MEA stated that Starmer’s visit builds on the momentum from PM Modi’s July 23–24 visit to the United Kingdom.

During that visit, the leaders reaffirmed their shared vision for a forward-looking India-UK partnership. They welcomed the signing of the historic CETA, which significantly enhanced bilateral trade, investment, economic collaboration, and job creation in both nations.

The leaders also agreed on a Double Contribution Convention alongside CETA, facilitating professionals and service industries in both countries while promoting competitiveness and reducing costs for commercial entities.

PM Modi highlighted opportunities for deeper interaction between India’s GIFT City, the first international financial services centre in Gujarat, and the UK’s robust financial ecosystem.

During the UK visit, PM Modi and Starmer also finalised a Defence Industrial Roadmap to encourage co-design, co-development, and co-production of defence products.

They underscored the importance of regular military engagement and expressed satisfaction at the deepening defence and security partnership between India and the UK.

Starmer’s upcoming visit is expected to help India and the UK strengthen ties across economic, technological, and strategic sectors.

The engagement underscores both nations’ commitment to a long-term, comprehensive partnership aimed at mutual growth, innovation, and global cooperation.
