Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Raj Kapoor on his 100th birth anniversary. The PM took to X (formerly Twitter) to reflect on the legendary filmmaker’s immense contribution to Indian and global cinema.
In his post, PM Modi described Raj Kapoor as “a visionary filmmaker, actor, and the eternal showman.” He noted that Kapoor’s work transcended generations and left an indelible mark on cinema.
PM Modi shared that Kapoor’s passion for cinema began early in his life. He worked tirelessly to become a pioneering storyteller, blending artistry, emotion, and social commentary in his films. His works, according to the PM, reflected the struggles and aspirations of ordinary people.

“His films resonate worldwide, with iconic characters and unforgettable melodies,” the PM added. He also praised Kapoor’s ability to tackle diverse themes with ease and excellence, and highlighted the enduring popularity of the music in his films.
“Raj Kapoor was not just a filmmaker but a cultural ambassador,” PM Modi continued. He added that Kapoor had taken Indian cinema to the global stage, paving the way for future generations of filmmakers and actors.
Earlier, during a meeting with the Kapoor family in the national capital, PM Modi spoke about Kapoor’s global influence. He said, “In 1947, we had ‘Neel Kamal’, and in 2047, as we approach a 100-year journey, it symbolises the immense contribution of such a vast nation.”
PM Modi emphasized that, while the term “soft power” didn’t exist back then, Raj Kapoor had already established India’s cultural strength globally.
Raj Kapoor, born in Peshawar (now in Pakistan), was the eldest son of actor Prithviraj Kapoor. Widely regarded as one of India’s greatest cinematic icons, Raj Kapoor starred in and produced several landmark films. His contributions earned him multiple accolades, including three National Film Awards.
