Nehru, a central figure in India’s freedom movement and the country’s first elected Prime Minister, served in the post for over 16 years until his death on 27th May 1964.
Over the course of his leadership, he came to be widely revered as the architect of modern India, championing scientific progress, democratic governance, and a secular ethos.
His policies laid the groundwork for key national institutions and steered the country through its formative years.
Consequently, his passing marked not only the end of a remarkable political career but also the close of a defining era in India’s political and governance landscape.
Tributes From The Congress Leadership
Leaders from the Indian National Congress, the party Nehru once led, also paid floral and written tributes to their towering icon.
Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi visited Nehru’s memorial at Shanti Van in New Delhi earlier in the day to offer floral homage.
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, described Nehru as a visionary leader who laid a ‘strong foundation’ for independent India.
In his tribute on X, he posted, “Respectful tribute to the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru ji on his death anniversary. With the dream of a strong and inclusive India, Nehruji laid a strong foundation for independent India with his visionary leadership. His contribution in the establishment of social justice, modernity, education, constitution and democracy is invaluable.”

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge echoed similar sentiments, calling Nehru the ‘creator of modern India’ and a ‘fearless guardian of democracy’.
He highlighted Nehru’s role in ushering scientific and economic development in India, stating that “21st-century India cannot be imagined without the contribution of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru”.

Legacy & Ideals
The official handle of the Congress party also issued a statement, honouring Nehru’s enduring legacy.
“On his death anniversary, we honour the nation’s first Prime Minister, Pt Jawaharlal Nehru, whose vision shaped modern India. His ideals of democracy, secularism & scientific temper continue to guide our way forward.”
Affectionately known as ‘Chacha Nehru’ for his love for children, Nehru inspired the celebration of his birth anniversary on 14th November as Children’s Day across India.
People across the nation continue to honour his enduring legacy, not only as a valiant freedom fighter, but also as a visionary institution-builder and a steadfast champion of India’s non-aligned foreign policy.
Nehru’s memory lives on not only in the institutions he helped build but also in the democratic values and constitutional principles that continue to guide India.
