Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid heartfelt tributes to celebrated filmmaker Bharathiraja following his demise, describing him as a visionary artist whose contribution fundamentally changed the landscape of Tamil cinema.
Sharing his condolences on social media, the Prime Minister said the veteran director’s passing had saddened him deeply and acknowledged the extraordinary impact Bharathiraja made on Indian filmmaking.
PM Modi stated that Bharathiraja brought a distinctive perspective to Tamil cinema and earned widespread admiration for portraying rural communities with remarkable realism and emotional depth. He conveyed his sympathies to the filmmaker’s family members, close associates, and admirers, while recognising Bharathiraja’s immense contribution to the cultural fabric of the country.

Bharathiraja entered the world of direction with 16 Vayathinile in 1977, a groundbreaking film featuring Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, and Sridevi.
The film received critical acclaim and introduced a new era of realistic storytelling in Tamil cinema.
Bharathiraja subsequently delivered several memorable films, including Kizhakke Pogum Rail, Alaigal Oivathillai, Mann Vasanai, Mudhal Mariyadhai, Vedham Pudhithu, Karuthamma, Kizhakku Cheemayile, and Anthimanthaarai.
Widely recognised for discovering and nurturing new talent, Bharathiraja provided opportunities to numerous actors and technicians who later achieved prominence in the industry. His films frequently addressed social concerns while remaining deeply rooted in the traditions, emotions, and realities of rural Tamil Nadu.
The filmmaker’s death has led to an outpouring of condolences from political leaders, members of the film fraternity, and fans nationwide.
Many have remembered Bharathiraja as a pioneering storyteller, a mentor to emerging talent, and one of the most influential filmmakers in the history of Indian cinema.
