PM Modi Pays Tribute To Environmentalist Daripalli Ramaiah; Hails Him As A Sustainability Icon

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered heartfelt condolences on the passing of environmentalist Daripalli Ramaiah, describing him as a ‘champion of sustainability’ for his decades-long dedication to planting and preserving trees.

Known as Vanajeevi (Forest Man), Ramaiah’s contributions to environmental protection earned him national recognition, including the Padma Shri award in 2017.

A Life Devoted To Nature

In a post on social media platform X, PM Modi acknowledged Ramaiah’s tireless work and deep-rooted love for nature.

“Daripalli Ramaiah Garu will be remembered as a champion of sustainability. He devoted his life to planting and protecting lakhs of trees. His tireless efforts reflected a deep love for nature and care for future generations. His work will keep motivating our youth in their quest to build a greener planet,” PM Modi wrote.

PM Modi also expressed condolences to Ramaiah’s family and admirers, concluding his message with ‘Om Shanti’.

Remembering The Forest Man

Daripalli Ramaiah passed away on April 12 at the age of 87 after a prolonged illness. He gained recognition for his grassroots approach to environmental activism.

Born on July 1, 1937, in Reddypally, Khammam district (then undivided Andhra Pradesh), Ramaiah spent over five decades promoting tree plantation and social forestry.

He was often seen carrying seeds in his pocket, ready to sow them on barren lands across Telangana.

His dedication led to the planting of more than one crore saplings, creating green belts that provide both fruits and shade to communities.

Ramaiah believed that the survival of humankind was inseparable from the health of the natural environment.

Telangana CM Revanth Reddy’s Tribute

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy also mourned the demise of the environmentalist, noting that Ramaiah’s individual efforts inspired society at large.

“Ramaiah launched plantation as an individual and influenced the entire society. The Padma Shri awardee inspired the youth by dedicating his entire life to environmental protection,” CM Reddy said in a statement.

Ramaiah’s contributions earned him several accolades, including the Seva Award in 1995, the Vanamitra Award in 2005, and the National Innovations and Outstanding Traditional Knowledge Award in 2015, further affirming his impact on environmental conservation.

Following the formation of Telangana, the state government actively supported his mission through its flagship green initiative, Telangana Ku Haritha Haram, which aimed to increase the state’s green cover.

Daripalli Ramaiah leaves behind a legacy rooted in ecological stewardship. His life’s mission to green the Earth continues to resonate with environmental advocates and young Indians seeking to make a positive impact.

Prime Minister Modi’s tribute reflects the national sentiment- honouring a life lived in harmony with nature and devoted to the well-being of future generations.
