A Legacy Of Swarajya And Governance
In the video message, PM Modi said, “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is not just a name. For us, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is a deity worthy of worship. His personality was truly incredible. He established Swaraj and also embraced good governance. His life impacts us in many ways.”
In another post, the Prime Minister added, “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj always put the welfare of the people first and devoted himself to their safety. Therefore, his life remains a guide for India.”
Shivaji Maharaj, founder of the Maratha Empire, is remembered as a remarkable military administrator and tactician who fought and won several wars against the Mughal forces. He was crowned ‘Chhatrapati’ in 1674.
Celebrations Across The Nation
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti is observed annually on February 19. This year marks his 395th birth anniversary. The occasion is celebrated across the country, particularly in Maharashtra, with pride and devotion.
The Jayanti is observed twice each year as per different calendars. While the Hindu calendar marks his birth on the third day of Phalgun, the Gregorian calendar records it as February 19.
Shivaji Maharaj is also remembered for promoting Marathi and Sanskrit in administration, preserving Hindu political traditions, pioneering guerrilla warfare tactics and balancing alliances with the Mughal rulers. Deeply devoted to his mother Jijabai, he drew inspiration from spiritual teachings and Hindu saints.
