PM Modi Pays Tribute To Balasaheb Thackeray On His Birth Centenary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid homage to Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray on his birth centenary, noting that his vision for Maharashtra’s development continues to inspire generations.

PM Modi shared his tribute on the social media platform X, calling Thackeray a towering personality who profoundly influenced the state’s socio-political landscape.

The NDA’s governance record and commitment to regional aspirations are striking a chord with the people of the state,” the Prime Minister said.

He further highlighted Thackeray’s interests in culture, literature, journalism, and his early career as a cartoonist, which showcased his keen observation of society and fearless commentary on contemporary issues.

Born on January 23, 1926, in Pune, Balasaheb Thackeray passed away on November 17, 2012, in Mumbai.

A journalist, cartoonist, and political leader, he founded the Shiv Sena in 1966, advocating a strong pro-Hindu ideology and promoting the slogan ‘Maharashtra for Maharashtrians’.

His weekly Marathi publication, Marmik, played a pivotal role in shaping public opinion and mobilising local support, particularly against perceived job competition from migrants.

Despite never holding an elected office, Thackeray was regarded as one of the most influential figures in Maharashtra for decades, often called the ‘godfather of Maharashtra’ and revered as Hindu Hridaysamrat by his supporters.

His political sway was evident when the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance came to power in 1995, leading to the renaming of Bombay as Mumbai, honouring Goddess Mumbadevi.

Modi concluded his tribute emphasising Thackeray’s enduring impact: “His vision for Maharashtra’s progress continues to inspire us, and we will always strive to realise it.” The tribute underscores the lasting legacy of a leader whose influence extended beyond politics into the state’s culture and identity.
