Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday reflected on the death of Thiruparankundram devotee Thiru Poornachandran while speaking at a gathering in Madurai, using the occasion to mount a strong critique of the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu.
He told the audience that the incident had profoundly affected him and suggested that the circumstances surrounding the tragedy pointed to what he termed the state administration’s indifference. The Prime Minister remarked that the episode continued to weigh on his conscience.
Speaking about the 40-year-old who died during the Karthigai Deepam row, PM Modi characterised him as a devoted follower of Lord Murugan who had laid down his life.
He shared, “Today, in Madurai, I remembered Thiru Poornachandran. This happened due to the insensitivity of the DMK Government in the state.”
The interaction with the family, he noted, was emotionally charged and reinforced his resolve to address the matter publicly. He emphasised that he stood in solidarity with them in their grief.
Faith and Politics Intertwined
Intensifying his political remarks, the Prime Minister alleged that the controversy underscored a broader neglect of religious concerns under the present state government.
He argued that no government can stifle devotion and spiritual traditions through administrative decisions.
PM Modi affirmed that justice and faith will ultimately prevail and declared that devotees of Lord Murugan will not back down, regardless of political resistance.
His comments arrive at a crucial political moment as Tamil Nadu approaches Assembly elections, with the BJP-led NDA stepping up its campaign against the DMK.
By blending references to governance with pointed criticism, the Prime Minister signalled that faith, cultural identity and public administration will shape the state’s evolving electoral discourse.
