Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spotlighted India’s unprecedented strides in the energy sector, marking 11 years of sweeping reforms that have placed the country among global leaders in renewable energy.
Union Ministers Pralhad Joshi and Hardeep Singh Puri published two detailed articles outlining India’s achievements and future roadmap in clean and affordable energy as part of this recognition.
Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi underlined India’s leadership in green energy, noting that the country now ranks third in solar energy, fourth in wind power, and fourth in overall renewable capacity.
With over 232 GW of renewable energy already installed and another 176 GW underway, India’s clean energy push is shaping global conversations on energy transition.
Joshi credited this progress to a clear long-term vision and timely decisions under PM Modi’s leadership, dating back to his tenure as Gujarat’s Chief Minister, when he launched pioneering solar projects.
He noted that the journey began with a sector in crisis, chronic power shortages and major grid failures- and has since transformed into a model of resilience and innovation.
Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri’s article highlighted how India has become the third-largest energy consumer and oil consumer globally, the fourth-largest refiner, and a major LNG importer.
He noted that six crore Indians now visit fuel stations daily, illustrating the scale of energy access.
According to Puri, the PM Modi government has steered India out of the stagnation of the ‘lost decade’ into a phase of global leadership, overtaking Japan to become the world’s fourth-largest economy.
Key reforms in exploration and production (E&P), self-reliance in fuels, and energy affordability have all contributed to this growth.
India is expected to increase its energy demand by 2.5 times by 2047, contributing to a quarter of the global rise.
The strategy, as outlined by both ministers, is to navigate the trilemma of energy availability, affordability, and sustainability, even amidst global geopolitical disruptions.
Both articles emphasised that the journey towards energy Aatmanirbharta is no longer a vision but a tangible reality.
Under PM Modi’s leadership, the sector now reflects not just capacity expansion but strategic foresight, making India a decisive force in global energy.
As India moves into PM Modi 3.0, the energy sector stands as a testament to eleven years of consistent reform, grounded in vision, resilience, and innovation.
It is a model for other developing nations navigating the dual challenge of growth and sustainability.
