Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday combined infrastructure development with a broader political message, using the inauguration of the Delhi–Dehradun Economic Corridor to underline governance priorities and push for legislative reform.
Addressing a gathering in Uttarakhand after launching the Rs 12,000 crore highway project, Prime Minister Modi emphasised the role of a ‘double-engine’ government in accelerating development in the state, often referred to as Devbhoomi.
Alongside infrastructure, PM Modi made a strong appeal for political consensus on the proposed Women’s Reservation Bill, which seeks to ensure 33 per cent representation for women in legislative bodies.
“Today, from ‘Devbhoomi’, I once again appeal to all parties in the country to definitely support the amendment to the Nari Shakti Vandana Act. In 2029, we will ensure that 50 per cent of our country’s population receives their rights,” he stated.
The Prime Minister also urged support for the measure during a parliamentary discussion scheduled for April 16, stressing that the proposal must see implementation without delay.
“Lok Sabha elections will be held in 2029, followed by the ongoing state Assembly elections. It should see implementation before 2029. This is the sentiment of the nation. This is the desire of ‘Nari Shakti’ (women’s power),” PM Modi asserted.
Prime Minister Modi further mentioned that he had written a letter addressed to women across the country, encouraging them to engage with the issue and support the initiative.
During his address, PM Modi also praised the Uttarakhand government led by Pushkar Singh Dhami for introducing the Uniform Civil Code, describing it as a step aligned with constitutional expectations and suggesting that it could serve as a model for wider adoption.
Project Scale and Cost
The newly inaugurated Delhi–Dehradun Economic Corridor spans around 210 kilometres and will significantly improve connectivity between the two cities.
Once operational, it will likely reduce travel time from approximately six and a half hours to about two and a half hours, while also shortening the overall travel distance.
