PM Modi Leaves For South Africa To Attend G20 Leaders’ Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for Johannesburg on Friday to attend the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit at the invitation of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced his departure on social media, noting that he will also meet several world leaders during his visit.

The summit holds special significance as it is the first G20 Leaders’ Summit to be held on African soil.

In his departure statement, PM Modi highlighted the moment as historic, recalling that India’s G20 Presidency in 2023 had enabled the African Union’s inclusion as a permanent member of the grouping.

He described the summit as an important opportunity to discuss key global issues with a focus on solidarity, equality, and sustainability.

Furthermore, PM Modi noted that South Africa’s theme for this year’s summit builds on the outcomes of the New Delhi and Rio de Janeiro G20 meetings.

He reaffirmed that India will present its perspective rooted in the vision of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — One Earth, One Family, One Future.

This reflects India’s commitment to collective progress, inclusive growth, and global cooperation.

Key Sessions at the Summit

The 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit, scheduled for 22 and 23 November in Johannesburg, will feature three major sessions:

  • Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth – Leaving No One Behind: Discussions will focus on economic development, trade, financing, and debt-related challenges.
  • A Resilient World – The G20’s Contribution: Leaders will deliberate on climate change, disaster risk reduction, just energy transitions, and food systems.
  • A Fair and Just Future for All: This session will address critical minerals, decent work, and the growing influence of artificial intelligence.

PM Modi will hold several bilateral meetings with global leaders on the sidelines of the summit to strengthen partnerships and address mutual priorities.

The MEA also confirmed that he will participate in the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Leaders’ Meeting hosted by South Africa, further reinforcing trilateral cooperation among the three democracies.

India played a pivotal role in securing the African Union’s inclusion in the G20 during its 2023 presidency, a diplomatic milestone widely regarded as transformative.

PM Modi’s presence at the summit reaffirms India’s dedication to fostering multilateral cooperation and supporting Africa’s growing global role.

The G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg further promises to be a significant platform for addressing shared global challenges and deepening international collaboration.
