Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Johannesburg, South Africa, on Friday to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit, marking the first time the event is being hosted on the African continent.
Modi described the occasion as ‘particularly special’, noting that it reflects Africa’s growing role in global affairs.
He noted that India’s G20 Presidency in 2023 inducted the African Union as a permanent member of the grouping—an achievement he called historic.
In his departure statement, PM Modi emphasised that South Africa’s theme for the summit—Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability—builds on the outcomes of previous summits held in New Delhi and Rio de Janeiro.
He stated that the Johannesburg Summit presents an important platform to discuss pressing global challenges and deepen cooperation with developing nations.
Modi affirmed that India will share its perspective rooted in Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam and the vision of One Earth, One Family, One Future.
Moreover, the two-day summit will include three major sessions addressing a broad range of global issues:
PM Modi will hold several bilateral meetings with world leaders on the sidelines of the summit to strengthen strategic partnerships and discuss mutual priorities.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, he will also take part in the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Leaders’ Meeting, hosted by South Africa, to reinforce trilateral cooperation among the three major developing democracies.
South Africa will host the G20 Leaders’ Summit on 22 and 23 November in Johannesburg, the country’s economic hub.
Furthermore, Modi’s visit reflects India’s continued engagement with global partners and its commitment to shaping a fair, sustainable, and inclusive world order through multilateral cooperation.
