Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday mounted one of his sharpest political offensives against the Congress party, accusing it of repeatedly undermining Assam’s identity, dignity, and development.
Speaking after inaugurating the fertiliser unit at Namrup, PM Modi framed the contest in the state as a clear ideological battle between progress and neglect, protection and appeasement.
Addressing a large public gathering, the Prime Minister alleged that Congress has consistently opposed Assam’s growth and treated the Northeast as politically expendable. He charged the opposition with insulting Assamese pride, citing the legacy of cultural icon Bhupen Hazarika.
PM Modi said Congress showed disrespect even when the BJP-led government honoured the legendary musician with the Bharat Ratna.
Taking the attack further, Prime Minister Modi accused Congress of actively resisting industrial progress in the state. He said the party opposed the government’s decision to establish a semiconductor manufacturing unit in Nagaon district, a project he described as vital for Assam’s economic future and India’s technological self-reliance.
According to PM Modi, such opposition exposed Congress’s mindset of blocking opportunities rather than creating them.
The Prime Minister also delivered a pointed critique on the sensitive issue of infiltration. He alleged that Congress prioritised vote-bank politics over the rights of the indigenous Assamese people.
Prime Minister Modi claimed the party supported infiltrators who altered Assam’s demographic balance, calling them a ‘protected vote base’ of the opposition.
In contrast, he asserted that the BJP has worked relentlessly to safeguard the rights, culture, and land of Assam’s native communities.
Key Stops on PM Modi’s Assam Itinerary
Earlier in the day, PM Modi struck an emotional chord by paying homage to the martyrs of the historic Assam Movement at Swahid Smarak Kshetra in Guwahati. He offered floral tributes at the bust of Khargeswar Talukdar, the first martyr of the 1979-85 anti-foreigner agitation.
The visit carried deep symbolic weight, as the memorial honours 860 people who sacrificed their lives to protect Assam’s identity and constitutional rights.
The Prime Minister also toured the martyrs’ gallery, paying respect to each individual commemorated there. His presence at the site was widely seen as an acknowledgement of Assam’s turbulent history and a reaffirmation of the Centre’s recognition of those sacrifices.
Adding a softer yet strategic dimension to his visit, PM Modi later interacted with 25 students from across Assam aboard the cruise vessel Charaideo on the Brahmaputra.
The interaction reinforced his focus on youth engagement and state outreach, blending politics with personal connection.
Through sharp rhetoric, symbolic gestures, and targeted messaging, Prime Minister Narendra Modi turned his Assam visit into a clear political statement, one that placed identity, development, and accountability at the centre of the state’s political narrative.
