PM Modi Launches Mahila Rojgar Yojana; Transfers Rs 7,500 Crore to 75 Lakh Women in Bihar

PM Narendra Modi on Friday virtually launched the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana, transferring ₹10,000 each to the bank accounts of 75 lakh women in Bihar under the first phase of the scheme. The government disbursed a total of ₹7,500 crore directly to the beneficiaries.

PM Modi joined the launch from Delhi, while CM Nitish Kumar, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, attended the event in Patna.

The scheme, originally announced by CM Nitish Kumar, aims to make women self-reliant by creating opportunities for self-employment and livelihood.

75 Lakh Selected from 3.06 Crore Applicants

Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary said the government received 3.06 crore applications, out of which 75 lakh women were chosen as the first beneficiaries. CM Nitish Kumar thanked PM Modi for the launch, noting that successful entrepreneurs under the scheme could later receive up to ₹2 lakh in assistance.

Nitish Kumar highlighted Bihar’s women-focused policies, including 50% reservation for women in Panchayati Raj institutions and the growth of over one crore Jeevika Didis in 11 lakh self-help groups. He credited the NDA government for Bihar’s development since 2005 and contrasted it with the pre-2005 period.

Taking a swipe at RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, he remarked that after losing power, Lalu “brought his wife to the Chief Minister’s chair.”

PM Modi Praises Scheme and Banking Reforms

Interacting with beneficiaries, PM Modi praised the initiative as a significant step by the Nitish Kumar government. He said such a massive direct transfer was possible only because of reforms like the Jan Dhan Yojana, which created over 30 crore bank accounts in the last decade.

The Prime Minister recalled how a former PM once admitted that only 15% of central funds reached the people, while “today, every rupee directly reaches beneficiaries’ accounts.”

The large-scale rollout comes months before the 2025 Assembly elections. The NDA aims to showcase its welfare outreach and development record, especially targeting women voters who played a decisive role in earlier polls.
