PM Modi Launches ‘Gyan Bharatam Portal’ To Preserve India’s Manuscript Heritage

On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched the ‘Gyan Bharatam Portal’, a pioneering digital platform designed to fast-track the preservation, digitisation, and public accessibility of India’s rich manuscript heritage.

The launch took place at the International Conference on Gyan Bharatam, held from 11th to 13th September at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

The Ministry of Culture organised this landmark conference, titled ‘Reclaiming India’s Knowledge Legacy through Manuscript Heritage’, which attracted over 1,100 participants.

Scholars, experts, cultural practitioners, and representatives from institutions across India and abroad convened to collaborate and discuss strategies to safeguard India’s priceless manuscript collection.

A Visionary National Initiative

The ‘Gyan Bharatam’ initiative embodies a national movement dedicated to both honouring India’s civilisational roots and driving innovation for the future.

The platform supports Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047, where India emerges as a global leader—or Vishwa Guru—merging ancient wisdom with modern technology.

Designed as an integrated framework, the portal aims to rejuvenate India’s manuscript legacy by focusing on key areas such as identification, documentation, preservation, digitisation, and global dissemination.

Moreover, this includes the creation of a national register of manuscripts, conservation efforts for fragile texts, and large-scale digitisation powered by advanced AI-driven tools.

Features and Objectives of Gyan Bharatam

‘Gyan Bharatam’ offers a comprehensive approach that includes:

  • Research, translation, and publication of rare and endangered manuscripts.
  • Capacity building for scholars, conservators, and practitioners involved in manuscript preservation.
  • Development of user-friendly digital platforms to enhance public engagement and educational outreach.
  • Encouraging collaborative programmes involvin
  • g the public, academics, and cultural organisations.
  • Establishing global partnerships to facilitate India’s role in international knowledge exchange.
  • Integrating manuscript wisdom into educational curricula, strengthening cultural awareness among youth.

During his visit, PM Modi also toured an exhibition organised by the Ministry of Culture, showcasing India’s manuscript heritage and related preservation techniques.

The launch of the ‘Gyan Bharatam Portal’ further marks a significant step in digitalising this heritage and making it accessible worldwide.

By harnessing technology alongside traditional scholarship, the portal promises to protect India’s invaluable manuscripts from decay while ensuring their knowledge reaches future generations.

This initiative underscores India’s commitment to safeguarding its past as it charts a course towards a technologically advanced, culturally rich future.
