Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set out on a three-day visit to Poland and Ukraine, marking a significant effort to bolster bilateral relations with these key European partners.
First Stop: Poland
The Prime Minister is likely to arrive in Poland on Wednesday, making it the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in 45 years.
The visit is to coincide with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Poland, underscoring the enduring partnership between the two nations.
In his departure statement, PM Modi emphasized, “My visit to Poland comes as we mark 70 years of our diplomatic relations. Poland is a key economic partner in Central Europe. Our mutual commitment to democracy and pluralism further reinforces our relationship.”
During his stay, PM Modi will engage in high-level discussions with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Andrzej Duda.
The meetings are likely to focus on enhancing economic cooperation and fostering closer political ties.
Additionally, the Prime Minister will connect with the vibrant Indian community in Poland.
Second Stop: Ukraine
Following his visit to Poland, PM Modi will travel to Ukraine on 23 August, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992.
This visit comes at a time of intense conflict in Ukraine and reflects India’s ongoing support for a peaceful resolution.
The departure statement further read, “From Poland, I will be visiting Ukraine at the invitation of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This is the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ukraine. I look forward to the opportunity to build upon earlier conversations with President Zelenskyy on strengthening bilateral cooperation and share perspectives on peaceful resolution of the ongoing Ukraine conflict.”
The Prime Minister’s engagements in Kyiv will cover a broad spectrum of bilateral issues, including political, trade, economic, educational, and cultural exchanges.
The Ministry of External Affairs has outlined that these discussions will aim to lay a strong foundation for future collaboration.
India’s consistent stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict has been one of advocating for dialogue and diplomacy.
PM Modi previously met with President Zelenskyy during the 50th G7 Summit in Italy, describing their talks as very productive and reaffirming India’s commitment to supporting a peaceful resolution.
In addition to diplomatic efforts, India has provided significant humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, including essential medicines and medical equipment, reflecting its ongoing support amidst the conflict.
The Prime Minister’s European tour highlights India’s strategic focus on strengthening ties with key global partners and contributing to international peace and stability through dialogue and cooperation.
