In a major push for urban mobility, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to Aarey JVLR section of Mumbai Metro Line 3 on Saturday. The project cost around Rs 14,120 crore and will significantly improve commuting in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Key Features of Mumbai Metro Line 3

Out of ten stations, nine will be underground. The fully operational line is expected to cater to about 12 lakh passengers daily. Funding for the project comes from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). An official stated that the project aims to meet the rising traffic demand in Mumbai, reduce traffic jams, and decrease pollution.

Mumbai Metro Line 3 is the first underground metro line in the city. It will connect the Cuffe Parade business district to SEEPZ in the north-central area, linking BKC and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The journey from the Domestic Airport station to Cuffe Parade will take about 45 minutes, compared to over two hours by car during peak traffic.

Infrastructure Developments in Thane and Navi Mumbai

PM Modi also laid the foundation for the Thane Integral Ring Metro Rail Project, costing around Rs 12,200 crore. The project will span 29 km with 20 elevated and two underground stations. The Thane Municipal Corporation will contribute Rs 5,078.04 crore toward the project.

Additionally, Modi initiated the Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension from Chheda Nagar to Anand Nagar, valued at Rs 3,310 crore. He also laid the foundation stone for Phase-1 of the Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA) project, worth Rs 2,550 crore.

These initiatives aim to provide faster and more economical transport options, benefiting thousands of daily commuters, particularly students and working professionals.
