On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Chhattisgarh’s grand new Assembly building in Nava Raipur, marking the state’s 25th Foundation Day with a celebration that reflected both cultural pride and a forward-looking vision for governance.
During the ceremony, PM Modi unveiled a life-sized statue of former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna awardee Atal Bihari Vajpayee and planted a sapling under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative, symbolising a renewed commitment to environmental stewardship.
Governor Raman Deka, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and Assembly Speaker Raman Singh joined the Prime Minister.
Addressing the gathering of lawmakers, artists, and citizens, he praised the new complex as a representation of Chhattisgarh’s steady progress since its creation in 2000.
“This Vidhan Sabha is not just a building; it is the heartbeat of democracy, rooted in tradition and soaring toward innovation,” he stated.
Built at a cost of Rs 324 crore, the new Assembly complex spans 51 acres in Nava Raipur’s Atal Nagar and replaces the temporary venues, including a private school and government offices, that previously hosted legislative sessions.
The structure, themed ‘Dharti Dhurandhar’, merges Chhattisgarh’s cultural essence with sustainable design.
The 200-seat Assembly hall, expandable after delimitation, features a ceiling sculpted with motifs of rice grains and leaves, a tribute to the state’s identity as India’s ‘Rice Bowl’.
The interiors display intricate tribal motifs inspired by Bastar’s traditional art, showcasing local craftsmanship at its finest.
A Model of Green and Inclusive Infrastructure
Environmentally conscious from its inception, the building incorporates solar energy systems, rainwater harvesting, and expansive green zones.
Comprising three interconnected blocks, the complex houses a 500-seat auditorium, parking for 850 vehicles, and essential amenities such as allopathic, homoeopathic, and Ayurvedic medical units, along with a bank, post office, and canteen, all located on the lower ground floor for public convenience.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai described the structure as ‘a people’s Vidhan Sabha, open, transparent, and inclusive’.
The inauguration carried special emotional resonance, aligning with the legacy of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who had championed the creation of Chhattisgarh from Madhya Pradesh in 2000.
Paying tribute, PM Modi asserted, “Atal ji’s vision gave Chhattisgarh identity; today, this building carries his dream forward.”
Applause swept through the audience as the bronze statue of Vajpayee unveiled amid landscaped gardens, while schoolchildren waved the tricolour in celebration.
Saturday’s event coincided with the launch of infrastructure projects worth Rs 14,260 crore in roads, healthcare, and energy, as well as a heart-warming interaction between the Prime Minister and 2,500 children successfully treated for heart ailments.
As the national flag was hoisted atop the dome, the state marked its silver jubilee with a renewed sense of purpose, entering its next 25 years with a legislative complex that symbolises the harmony between tradition, democracy, and sustainability.
