Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday chaired a high-level meeting with top defence and security officials to review the situation in Jammu and Kashmir following the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam.
The attack, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians, has drawn sharp condemnation and prompted swift action from the central government.
Key Attendees
The meeting at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, was attended by
- Defence Minister Rajnath Singh
- National Security Advisor Ajit Doval
- Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan
Three service chiefs:
- Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi
- Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi
- Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh
Their presence underlined the seriousness with which the government is treating the incident.
Prior Consultations & Briefings
Ahead of Tuesday’s review, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had met with the Prime Minister on Monday.
The meeting followed a detailed briefing by General Chauhan on measures taken post-attack.
According to sources, security agencies have already initiated an intensive probe into the incident, focusing on cross-border involvement.
The government has vowed that those behind the Pahalgam attack, both the terrorists and their conspirators, will face severe consequences.
It has also made clear that Pakistan’s continued support for cross-border terrorism will not go unanswered.
A range of diplomatic and strategic responses are under consideration.
All-Party Unity
In a rare show of unity, opposition parties extended full support to the government following the attack.
An all-party meeting convened in the aftermath saw unanimous backing for stringent action against the perpetrators.
This collective resolve signals a unified national stance on counter-terrorism.
Cabinet Committee On Security Briefing
The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by PM Modi, met the day after the attack.
During the meeting, officials detailed cross-border linkages and discussed intelligence inputs indicating the timing of the assault, just after peaceful elections and steady economic development in Jammu and Kashmir.
Among the key decisions was placing the Indus Water Treaty in abeyance, a symbolic but powerful move aimed at signalling India’s intolerance for Pakistan’s role in abetting terrorism.
Additional counter-terror and diplomatic measures are likely to follow in the coming days.
The government’s actions point to a no-compromise approach on national security.
With PM Modi at the helm of the response, India’s resolve to protect its citizens and territory remains unwavering, and further steps are expected to isolate those supporting terrorism diplomatically and economically.
