Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a fresh telephonic conversation with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday, extending greetings for Eid and Nowruz while reviewing the volatile security landscape in West Asia.
During the exchange, PM Modi firmly denounced assaults on critical infrastructure, asserting that such actions undermine regional equilibrium and disrupt global supply chains.
He emphasised the necessity of preserving freedom of navigation and ensuring that maritime routes remain open, secure, and uninterrupted.
The discussion marked their second interaction within ten days. PM Modi reiterated India’s concern over escalating hostilities, highlighting civilian casualties and infrastructural damage.
He maintained that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable pathways to resolution.
The Prime Minister underscored the importance of uninterrupted transit of goods and energy supplies, warning that disruptions could adversely affect India’s economy and broader regional stability. Pezeshkian briefed him on Iran’s current position and recent developments.
Following diplomatic engagement, Iran permitted India-flagged tankers to transit through the Strait of Hormuz, easing immediate concerns over maritime security.
Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi have sustained regular dialogue since the conflict erupted on February 28.
Their discussions covered shipping safety, bilateral ties, and cooperation within BRICS.
Separately, Finnish President Alexander Stubb suggested that India could play a constructive diplomatic role in easing tensions between the United States and Iran, advocating ceasefire efforts and renewed negotiations.
