Union Minister J P Nadda conveyed his greetings, wishing people good health, happiness and prosperity.
“My heartfelt greetings to everyone on the auspicious occasion of Mahalaya. May Maa Durga’s blessings always be with us, bringing joy, good health, and prosperity into our lives. Shubho Mahalaya,” he said.
Mahalaya marks the end of Pitru Paksha, dedicated to honouring ancestors, and the beginning of Devi Paksha, which heralds the festive season. The occasion holds particular importance for Bengalis awaiting Maa Durga’s arrival for Durga Puja.
According to Hindu mythology, Mahalaya commemorates Goddess Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura, symbolising the triumph of good over evil.
Legend states that when Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara could not defeat the demon, they sought Adi Shakti’s intervention. Goddess Durga emerged as the divine force who ultimately vanquished Mahishasura.
Mahalaya also marks the traditional ritual of ‘Chokkhu Daan’, during which artists paint the eyes of Goddess Durga’s idols. Devotees perform a special puja before the ritual, symbolically completing the idols.
Across the country, particularly in Bengal, devotees rise early to perform ‘tarpan’ on riverbanks, including along the Ganga, offering water and prayers in memory of departed ancestors. Families also feed Brahmins and distribute meals among the needy.
Mahalaya signals the countdown to Durga Puja, ushering in devotion, cultural festivities and celebration, especially across West Bengal.
