PM Modi Highlights Sikkim’s Cultural Legacy, Growth In 51st Statehood Year

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about the cultural legacy and developmental progress of Sikkim as it stepped into its 51st year of statehood. He referred to an article written by Jyotiraditya M Scindia, highlighting the state’s balanced growth.

The Prime Minister pointed out that the article presents Khangchendzonga as a central symbol of Sikkim’s identity. He described the mountain as a guardian of the region’s heritage, collective memory, and cultural consciousness.

The article explains the traditional concept of the five treasures linked to Khangchendzonga. These elements: gold, silver, gems, grains, and holy texts represent different dimensions of the state’s progress and values.

Scindia described the first treasure, gold, as a reflection of Sikkim’s people. He highlighted the strong sense of unity among the Lepcha, Bhutia, and Nepali communities, emphasising that social harmony drives sustainable development.

The second treasure, silver, symbolises Sikkim’s natural beauty. The flowing Teesta and Rangeet rivers, along with forests and mountainous terrain, showcase the state’s rich biodiversity.

The third treasure, gems, represents Sikkim’s cultural and spiritual heritage. Religious sites, monasteries, and landmarks such as Buddha Park in Ravangla and Bhaleydhunga reflect deep-rooted traditions.

The fourth treasure, grains, highlights Sikkim’s achievements in sustainable agriculture. Its status as a fully organic state and its success in farming practices demonstrate a model for eco-friendly development.

The fifth treasure, holy books, signifies knowledge and intellectual growth. Institutions such as the permanent campus of Sikkim State University in Namchi reflect the state’s commitment to education and future readiness.
