Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday underscored the continued relevance of Lord Gautam Buddha’s teachings in a world marked by rising tensions and conflicts, saying they offer a path towards peace and balance.
Speaking during the 133rd episode of Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister extended advance greetings for Buddha Purnima and reflected on Buddha’s timeless message.
“The month of May begins on an auspicious note. In a few days, we will celebrate Buddha Purnima. I extend my greetings to all citizens in advance. The teachings of Gautama Buddha remain relevant even today. He taught that peace begins within and that mastering oneself is the greatest victory,” PM Modi said.
Highlighting the current global scenario, PM Modi added, “The kind of tensions and conflicts the world is going through today, Buddha’s thoughts are even more relevant in such times.”
The Prime Minister cited international efforts to promote Buddhist teachings, noting that in Chile, Drubpon Otzer Rinpoche from Ladakh is leading initiatives to spread meditation and compassion.
The stupa in the Cochiguaz Valley, PM Modi said, is helping people experience peace and reflects how India’s ancient traditions are reaching global audiences.
The Prime Minister also emphasised the link between Buddhist teachings and environmental consciousness.
“Lord Buddha attained knowledge under a tree. Nature plays an integral role in our lives,” he further said.
PM Modi highlighted Karma Monastery as an example, describing it as a living forest spread across 100 acres with over 700 native trees preserved.
“Buddha’s teachings were not just relevant in the past, but are also relevant today and important for the future,” the Prime Minister added, stressing that the occasion of Buddha Purnima inspires people to embrace peace, compassion and balanced living.
