Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a sharp critique of Congress, accusing the party of neglecting Northeast development for decades, creating serious national security concerns.
He spoke at the inauguration of the new terminal building at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. He stressed the region’s long-standing struggles under Congress-led policy paralysis.
PM Modi cited Assam specifically, alleging that previous governance allowed large-scale illegal infiltration, resulting in ongoing demographic and security challenges.
The Prime Minister argued that successive Congress administrations prioritised vote-bank politics over border security and the protection of indigenous communities.
He stressed that the BJP-led government now works with full commitment to make Assam infiltration-free using lawful and transparent measures.
Prime Minister Modi claimed that Congress and its allies attempted to obstruct these efforts by defending infiltrators. He added that they also questioned government actions aimed at securing the state and nation.
The Prime Minister defended the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, describing it as a constitutional measure to ensure free and fair elections.
He further noted that Congress’s discomfort became evident as illegal infiltrators were identified and removed from voter lists, prompting many to leave the country.
PM Modi emphasised that the government cannot compromise democracy and national security for political convenience, noting that the BJP-led administration is delivering a decisive shift in governance and development for the people in the Northeast.
New Terminal Marks Infrastructure Milestone
Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the new terminal building at Guwahati airport, marking a significant milestone in Assam’s aviation infrastructure. He was joined by Union Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during the event.
The terminal is designed to handle an annual passenger capacity of 13.1 million. It aims to enhance air connectivity in the Northeast while setting standards in sustainability and technology-driven airport operations.
The project incorporates modern facilities, improved passenger amenities, and eco-friendly features for seamless travel experiences. It forms part of the Centre’s wider push to strengthen infrastructure and regional connectivity under its aviation expansion plans.
PM Modi stated that the new terminal will boost Assam’s infrastructure and economic growth, highlighting that enhanced aviation facilities will promote tourism, trade, and investment, further integrating the Northeast with the rest of India.
The Prime Minister highlighted the government’s focus on addressing historical neglect and improving regional security. He also emphasised accelerating development initiatives in the Northeast.
He reiterated that governance, infrastructure development, and strict enforcement measures are central to transforming the region and safeguarding national interests.
This event underscores the BJP-led government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen Northeast infrastructure, enforce border security, and promote socio-economic growth in Assam and neighbouring states.
