Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised India’s strides towards self-reliance in the space sector and outlined plans for the nation to have its space station shortly.
Speaking from the Red Fort on Independence Day, he underlined the importance of youth, innovation, and reforms in achieving these milestones.
PM Modi acknowledged the contribution of IAF Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, India’s first astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS) in recent times, and the second Indian after Rakesh Sharma in 1984. Shukla’s pioneering journey has inspired millions, demonstrating courage, dedication, and India’s growing role in space exploration.
“The experience gained by Captain Shukla onboard the ISS will prove invaluable for our Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme. India is preparing to launch crewed missions and ultimately establish its space station,” PM Modi stated.
ISRO has successfully completed hot tests for the Gaganyaan Service Module Propulsion System, paving the way for a second test vehicle and an uncrewed orbital mission this year.
These milestones aim to validate crew safety, recovery systems, and demonstrate India’s capability to operate crewed spacecraft in low Earth orbit.
Boosting Private Sector & Startups
The Prime Minister highlighted reforms that have empowered over 300 startups working in the space sector.
“Thousands of youth are contributing to India’s space dream. This reflects our confidence in the potential of young innovators,” he said.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh confirmed that Indian space startups have received $430 million in investments until March 2025. To further facilitate private sector participation, the government established the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) in June 2020.
IN-SPACe has enabled the transfer of 93 ISRO-developed technologies to private entities, promoting innovation and commercial growth in the space sector.
PM Modi reiterated that reforms in the space sector reflect the broader vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat. By combining governmental support, private sector engagement, and youth participation, India aims to not only strengthen its space capabilities but also become a global leader in human spaceflight and related technologies.
The Prime Minister concluded that India’s commitment to its space programme is a testament to the nation’s resolve for self-reliance and technological excellence. He added that it also reflects the effort to nurture a generation of innovators who will drive the country’s future beyond Earth.
