Prime Minister Narendra Modi has underscored the spiritual and cultural importance of Somnath Dham, calling it a timeless source of faith, courage, and self-respect for generations of Indians.
His remarks come ahead of a scheduled visit to the historic temple on 11 January, coinciding with the Somnath Swabhiman Parv celebrations.
In a message shared on the social media platform X, PM Modi reflected on the enduring legacy of Somnath Dham, noting its role in awakening collective consciousness over centuries.
“The grand legacy of the sacred and pure Somnath Dham has been awakening the consciousness of people for centuries. The divine energy emanating from here will continue to illuminate the lamp of faith, courage, and self-respect for ages to come,” he wrote.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the temple’s spiritual significance through a Sanskrit shloka, praising the shrine’s association with Lord Shiva.
The verse describes Somnath as a sacred site where devotees can attain spiritual perfection, virtue, and liberation (moksha), emphasising that it radiates divine energy and enlightenment.
Commemorating a Millennium of Resilience
Ahead of the visit, PM Modi shared memories from his previous trips to Somnath Temple and recalled the historical attacks on the shrine, including the first assault in January 1026.
He noted that these invasions failed to weaken the faith of the people and instead strengthened India’s cultural unity.
“The attack of the year 1026 and the numerous assaults that followed thereafter could not shake our eternal faith. On the contrary, these strengthened the sentiment of India’s cultural unity, and the Somnath Temple was repeatedly revived and rebuilt,” he said.
The Somnath Swabhiman Parv marks 1,000 years since the first major attack on the temple, celebrating the enduring spirit of the sacred site and the resilience of India’s cultural heritage.
The festival honours the repeated reconstruction of the shrine over centuries, reflecting the steadfast devotion and unity of the Indian people.
PM Modi encouraged the public to share their experiences and memories from visits to Somnath using the hashtag #SomnathSwabhimanParv, highlighting the ongoing connection between the temple’s historic legacy and contemporary devotion.
