PM Modi Hails Surha Tal As India’s 100th Ramsar Site

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday hailed a major environmental milestone as India reached 100 Ramsar sites, with the Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary (Surha Tal) in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, receiving international recognition under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.

PM Modi said the wetland stands out for its rich avifaunal biodiversity and supports a wide range of migratory and resident bird species. He noted that this recognition reflects India’s sustained efforts to conserve and restore ecologically important wetlands across the country.

In a post on social media platform X, the Prime Minister described the achievement as a landmark moment, stating that it highlights India’s ‘unwavering commitment’ to protecting natural ecosystems.

PM Modi also said conservation efforts have strengthened in recent years through community participation, scientific research, innovation and awareness programmes, all of which have contributed to preserving biodiversity and maintaining ecological balance.

PM Modi emphasised that these initiatives will help secure a greener and more sustainable future for the coming generations. He linked the achievement to Mission LiFE, which encourages sustainable living and responsible consumption.

On World Environment Day, PM Modi further reaffirmed India’s commitment to a cleaner and greener future guided by the principle of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’, while emphasising the need for collective action to address environmental challenges.

The designation of Surha Tal as India’s 100th Ramsar site marks a major milestone in wetland conservation and reflects the country’s growing commitment to environmental protection.
