Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) on Thursday for its significant contribution to empowering small businesses and transforming the e-commerce landscape in India.

Launched in 2021, ONDC is a network comprising over 200 apps, including both buyer and seller platforms, with the goal of democratizing e-commerce across the country.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “ONDC has contributed to empowering small businesses and revolutionizing e-commerce, thus playing a vital role in furthering growth and prosperity.”

The Prime Minister quoted Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, who noted the platform’s role in bridging the gap between buyers and sellers.

Piyush Goyal asserted, “ONDC has revolutionized the country’s e-commerce landscape by building a robust and inclusive digital marketplace.”

He further added that, in just one year, the network has “not only achieved numerous milestones but also empowered businesses, especially small enterprises, by creating a level playing field for them on the network.”

“By bridging the gap between sellers and buyers, ONDC continues to revolutionize the nation’s e-commerce landscape!” Goyal added.

Since its inception, ONDC has facilitated over 150 million transactions across more than 200 networks.

The platform now hosts over 7 lakh sellers and service providers from more than 600 cities and towns, with consumers from over 1,100 locations engaging in transactions.

Additionally, ONDC has integrated more than 7,000 farmer-producer organizations, representing 35 lakh farmers, contributing to rural empowerment.

Around 50% of the beneficiaries of the MSME Trade Enablement and Marketing Initiative (MSME-TEAM), designed to support five lakh MSMEs, are women-owned businesses.
