Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday hailed India’s landmark achievement of establishing 100 GW Solar PV module manufacturing capacity, aligning with the national vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and the global goal of clean energy transition.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “This is yet another milestone towards self-reliance! It depicts the success of India’s manufacturing capabilities and our efforts towards popularising clean energy.”
The Prime Minister was responding to Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi’s announcement of the milestone under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM). Joshi noted that this marked a remarkable rise from just 2.3 GW in 2014.
Joshi credited the achievement to PM Modi’s leadership and policies such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for high-efficiency solar modules. He said India was building a robust, self-reliant solar manufacturing ecosystem. This would help achieve the 500 GW non-fossil capacity target by 2030.
The government aims to make India self-reliant in solar PV manufacturing and a major player in the global value chain. The plan is backed by the PLI Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar PV Modules and other measures ensuring a level playing field for Indian manufacturers.
The ALMM Order was issued by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) on 2 January 2019.
The first ALMM list, published on 10 March 2021, had an enlisted capacity of around 8.2 GW.
In just over four years, capacity grew more than twelvefold to cross the 100 GW Solar PV module manufacturing capacity mark.
The number of manufacturers increased from 21 in 2021 to 100, with 123 manufacturing units in operation. This growth involved both established firms and new entrants.
Many adopted high-efficiency technologies and vertically integrated operations. The result is a competitive and diverse manufacturing base that can meet domestic demand and supply global markets.
The crossing of the 100 GW mark highlights the success of India’s solar PV manufacturing story. It reflects the joint efforts of the industry, state governments, and the Government of India, the official statement added.
