Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his Gujarat visit, flagged off Suzuki’s first global Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), the e-Vitara, on Tuesday.
Developed under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, the e-Vitara marks a significant leap in India’s push towards electric mobility and green energy.
Suzuki will export the vehicle, produced at its Hansalpur manufacturing facility, to over 100 countries, including Japan and several European nations.
Calling it a ‘special day’ in India’s journey towards self-reliance, PM Modi emphasised the government’s focus on boosting clean energy and domestic manufacturing.
Present at the launch event were Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Japan’s Ambassador to India, Keiichi Ono.
The e-Vitara represents Suzuki’s strategic move to position India as its global EV manufacturing hub.
PM Modi also announced that the TDS Lithium-Ion Battery plant in Gujarat will begin local production of hybrid battery electrodes, aligning with India’s expanding battery ecosystem.

The facility is a joint venture between Toshiba, Denso, and Suzuki and will play a pivotal role in scaling India’s battery innovation and reducing import dependence.
A Manufacturing Powerhouse
The e-Vitara, first introduced in Europe in 2024 and showcased at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in January 2025, reflects India’s increasing competitiveness in the global automobile market.
With an annual production capacity of 2.6 million units across four Indian plants, Maruti Suzuki exported over 3.32 lakh vehicles and sold 19.01 lakh units domestically in FY25.
With commercial production of the e-Vitara now underway in Gujarat, India is poised to become Suzuki’s key export base for EVs.
This aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India), where advanced technologies, clean energy, and global trade converge to redefine India’s manufacturing landscape.
These two key developments—the launch of the e-Vitara and the expansion of the hybrid battery ecosystem—reinforce India’s role in the global green mobility revolution.
They also highlight the government’s long-term strategy to drive exports, reduce carbon emissions, and encourage sustainable industrial growth.
