PM Modi Flags Off e-VITARA; Launches Local Hybrid Battery Production In Gujarat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the local production of hybrid battery electrodes in Hansalpur, Ahmedabad, and flagged off exports of Maruti Suzuki’s first global Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), the e-VITARA.

He described the occasion as a milestone in India’s quest for self-reliance and its rise as a hub for green mobility.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Today is a special day in India’s quest for self-reliance and being a hub for green mobility. At the programme in Hansalpur, e-VITARA will be flagged off. This Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) is made in India and will be exported to over a hundred nations. In a big boost to our battery ecosystem, production of hybrid battery electrodes will also commence at a plant in Gujarat.”

The Prime Minister inaugurated two landmark initiatives at the Suzuki Motor plant in Hansalpur, signalling India’s growing leadership in green technology.

Suzuki will now export the e-VITARA, its first global strategic BEV, to more than 100 countries, including advanced markets such as Europe and Japan.

With this milestone, India becomes Suzuki’s global manufacturing hub for electric vehicles, strengthening the nation’s position in the EV sector and reinforcing the Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.

Strengthening India’s Battery Ecosystem

In a move towards greater green energy self-reliance, PM Modi inaugurated the next phase of India’s battery ecosystem with the launch of localised production of hybrid battery electrodes at the TDS Lithium-Ion Battery plant in Gujarat.

The plant, a joint venture between Toshiba, Denso, and Suzuki, will enhance domestic manufacturing and innovation in clean energy.

This development allows India to produce over 80 per cent of battery value domestically, reducing dependence on imports and boosting the country’s EV infrastructure.

These initiatives underscore India’s ambition to become a global hub for green mobility while maintaining economic self-reliance.

By combining advanced manufacturing with sustainable technologies, the government aims to accelerate EV adoption domestically and internationally.

Experts note that the expansion of India’s battery ecosystem and the launch of the e-VITARA mark a significant step towards achieving environmental goals. They also promote local manufacturing and help establish India as a leader in the global EV market.

PM Modi’s engagement highlights a commitment to Aatmanirbhar Bharat, supporting both innovation and export-driven growth. It also ensures that India remains at the forefront of the green energy revolution.
