From Cinema to Politics
Born on June 22, 1974, in Chennai, C Joseph Vijay first gained nationwide recognition through his accomplishments in the Tamil film industry before stepping into politics.
Known to millions of fans as ‘Thalapathy’, C Joseph Vijay first enjoyed a distinguished acting career that made him one of the most influential personalities in South Indian cinema.
C Joseph Vijay, formally known as Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, comes from a film-oriented family. His father, SA Chandrasekhar, is a noted filmmaker, while his mother, Shoba Chandrasekhar, is a renowned singer.
Vijay began his acting career at a young age with Vetri in 1984 and gradually established himself among the leading actors of Tamil cinema.
Throughout his film career, Vijay delivered several major box-office successes, including Kushi, Thirumalai, Ghilli, Pokkiri, and Sarkar.
Although he initially became popular through romantic roles, C Joseph Vijay later earned acclaim for action-oriented performances that often highlighted social concerns and justice-related themes
The political undertones in many of his films fuelled discussions about a possible future in public life.
Vijay formally launched the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in 2024, marking the beginning of his political career.
The party achieved a remarkable breakthrough in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections by securing 108 seats and emerging as the largest party in the state legislature.
With support from the Indian National Congress and other allies, TVK formed the government in Tamil Nadu.
C Joseph Vijay registered victories from both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East constituencies before taking oath as the state’s Chief Minister on May 10, 2026.
