Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered a strong defence of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, praising his patience and composure while presiding over Parliament.
In a veiled critique of the Opposition’s conduct, the Prime Minister compared the Speaker’s role to that of a patient teacher managing a classroom.
“He handles all our members very well. Even if some arrogant, spoiled students from high-class families refuse to give up their rude behaviour, he still manages everyone as the head of the House. He doesn’t insult anyone and even tolerates everyone’s harsh words,” the Prime Minister said.
PM Modi added that Birla continues to maintain a ‘smile on his face’ despite the provocations he faces while conducting proceedings in the Lok Sabha.
According to the Prime Minister, Birla treats every member with respect and demonstrates remarkable restraint even when confronted with criticism or disruptive conduct.
He described the Speaker as a leader deeply committed to the Constitution and loyal to the parliamentary system.
PM Modi emphasised that once a member assumes the role of Speaker, he no longer represents a political party but instead safeguards the dignity and neutrality of the House.
The Prime Minister made the remarks through a video message during the foundation stone laying ceremony for the Kota airport in Kota, Rajasthan.
During the event, he also inaugurated several drinking water initiatives.
PM Modi highlighted Birla’s ability to guide members collectively and ensure that parliamentary proceedings continue smoothly despite political disagreements.
The political atmosphere has intensified ahead of an Opposition-backed motion seeking Birla’s removal as Speaker.
The situation escalated following disputes linked to discussions surrounding the unpublished memoirs of former Army Chief MM Naravane.
