PM Modi Congratulates Tarique Rahman After BNP Victory In Bangladesh Elections

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday extended his greetings to Tarique Rahman after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a commanding victory in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “I convey my warm congratulations to Mr. Tarique Rahman on leading BNP to a decisive victory in the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. This victory shows the trust of the people of Bangladesh in your leadership.”

“India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our common development goals,” the post further read.

Media reports citing unofficial tallies indicated that the BNP-led alliance won 210 seats in the 13th parliamentary elections, enabling it to form the next government.

Sources also suggested that Tarique Rahman is likely to take office as Prime Minister, signalling the return of a male leader to the top post in Bangladesh after nearly three and a half decades.

Preliminary figures from the Dhaka-17 constituency showed Tarique Rahman polling 72,699 votes, surpassing Jamaat-e-Islami candidate SM Khaliduzzaman, who received 68,300 votes.

The returning officer formally declared the outcome on Friday morning, confirming a winning margin of 4,399 votes. He also emerged victorious from the Bogra-6 constituency, where he secured 2,16,284 votes and comfortably defeated his nearest challenger.

Tarique Rahman is the son of former President Ziaur Rahman, founder of the BNP, and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. After his mother’s demise last year, he assumed the party’s leadership.

With the BNP’s electoral triumph, Tarique Rahman now stands ready to steer Bangladesh into a new phase of governance, as India conveys its readiness to expand cooperation with the incoming leadership.
