Lula defeated Liberal Party candidate Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, in Sunday’s presidential runoff.
According to the official tally, with 99.89 per cent of votes counted, Lula secured 51.78 per cent of valid votes, against Bolsonaro’s 48.23 per cent.
Lula is scheduled to take the oath of office on January 5, 2027, for a four-year term ending in 2030. His next term will involve efforts to stabilise public debt while navigating a Congress where Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party holds its largest parliamentary representation in decades.
PM Modi and Lula last met in February during the Brazilian President’s state visit to India. Their discussions covered critical minerals, digital cooperation, traditional knowledge, healthcare, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), entrepreneurship and mass communication.
Lula attended the second AI Impact Summit in New Delhi but skipped the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi in September to focus on his re-election campaign.
PM Modi’s message underscored both countries’ commitment to expanding their strategic partnership, strengthening economic and diplomatic cooperation and coordinating on issues affecting the Global South.
